Restoran Yuan Kee @ Jalan Kepong Baru, Kepong

Kepong, a fairly large town which located in Kuala Lumpur, is considered to be one of the food heaven amongst those food seekers. On Eddie's previous trip back here, he brought us to a stretch of food stalls located by the roadside of Jalan Kepong Baru.

Too many to choose from, and we decided Restoran Yuan Kee as our dinner place.
Restoran Yuan Kee

The stall offered variety of home cooked dishes to go with your white rice. They have plenty of signature dishes, so be sure to ask the assistant for recommendation. On our visit, we were recommended this
Special Stewed Pork Belly (RM 15)
I find the taste was somehow weird and slightly salty. Apart from that, the pork belly were too fat for my liking.

Claypot Chinese Wine Chicken (RM 16)
Chinese wine and curry leaves made up the fragrance of this dish. It was decent in taste but not spectacular. Could have been better should the chicken meat were better infused with the gravy.

Stir-fried Choy Sum (RM 10)
It was alright but the price tag is slightly expensive.

Spicy Homemade Bean Curd (RM 10)
The bean curd were fried initially offering a mild crisp on the outer layer. It was then topped off with the spicy gravy that consisted of minced pork. Tasted very much like the Ma-po tau foo. My favourite for the day.

The total bill came to RM 58.80 which consisted of white rice and a pot of Chinese tea. It was a decent price for the five of us. However, I was a little bit disappointed with the taste of the food. Maybe I had a higher expectation or we just ordered the wrong dishes for the night.

Atmosphere: 4/10
Food: 5/10 (non-halal)
Price: 5/10
Verdict: Just another ordinary stall offering some ordinary taste signature dishes.

My Homemade Tuna Sandwich

I'm so sorry to all my readers. With World Cup taking place in South Africa, I find myself unusually staying in front of the television more frequent. I have a lot of exciting posts coming up and I promise to update it more frequent than ever.

Malaysia, which is located in the Asian Zone, the late kickoff in South Africa would mean that the match will be broadcasted at 2.30am. To miss the match would be a little sinful because World Cup is only held once every four year. But staying up late will pose another problem too, the hungry stomach! And how do I satisfy my hungry stomach?

Sandwich is the answer! Firstly, I got myself a load of wholemeal bread. Honestly, I'd always preferred my sandwich made from the wholemeal bread.
Gardenia Wholemeal Bread

Next, it would be great should you be able to get some fresh vegetables to provide some extra munch to the sandwich. Since I'm just back from the Cameron Highlands, I just open the fridge to get some fresh veges which I got it from the highlands.
Cucumber, lettuce and tomatoes

Lazy to prepare a tuna? Don't worry as all you needed to do is to head to the nearest convenience store to pick your flavour. My personal favourite is the Ayam Brand Hot Tuna Mayonnaise.
Ayam Brand Hot Tuna Mayonnaise

For those that prefer some mild crisp on the sandwich, you can actually toast the bread which I did.
Easy to prepare

Spread the tuna on your toasted bread and there you go, a ready tuna sandwich to satisfy your hungry stomach.
My hot tuna sandwich

All in all, it took less than 3 minutes and you are ready to savour your home made tuna sandwich whilst not missing any actions from the live World Cup match. However, I do noted that tomatoes does not really blend well with the tuna. Perhaps, I prefer my tuna sandwich to be without the tomatoes.

Restoran Xi Yang Yang Sdn Bhd @ Sunway Mentari Business Park, PJ

With the current economic state still has not fully recovered from the credit crunch, many restaurants and even stalls has been slashing their profit margins to lure more customers. Besides giving discount, set meals is one of the many way that operators implement to provide a better value money to the consumers.

One of the Chinese restaurant having such practice is Restoran Xi Yang Yang in Sunway Mentari Business Park. Being the newest restaurant in the region, it offers some set meals at an unbeatable and unbelievable price.
Restoran Xi Yang Yang

An air-conditioned stall

The promotion of set meals that they are having now is as stated on the brochure.
Believe your eyes, it is that cheap!

I chose to have the Rm 22.90 set which consisted of a steamed fish, sweet sour pork, a fried vegetable and a soup. After 25 minutes of wait, the first dish that was served to me was the soup. Initially I thought that they would be serving the soup in the size of a rice bowl. So wrong I was, that in fact the soup was served in a medium sized clay pot!
Vegetable soup

You can choose your choice of soup. If you don't fancy the vegetable soup, just remember to ask for their choices of soup for the day when you are placing an order.
Seaweed soup
The soup came with the accompaniment of squids and pork fillets. Adequately flavoured with some kick of sweetness. I highly recommend this soup if you are a fan of seaweed.

Next came the sweet and sour pork dish.
Sweet and Sour Pork
I believe the breaded pork were freshly fried as it offered some mild crisp on the outside. Gravy were in the right proportion of sweet and sour taste as well.

As for the vegetables, you may too ask for the choices available. At my time of visit, I was recommended to take the baby kailan.
Stir-fried Baby Kailan
The baby kailan were so fresh that you can actually taste the sweetness of it. Hint of wok hei were tasted too.

I ordered the steamed version of the tilapia fish. When it was presented to my table, I was so surprise to note that:
1. Whole fish was served to me.
2. The fish weight at least 600g.
3. And, I eventually noticed that those tilapia fish were still alive and swimming in the tank!
Steamed Tilapia Fish in Sweet and Sour sauce
The meat was white, juicy and no hint of fishy smell. There were some part where the fish meat was tender. The gravy was well flavoured too, providing a great coating to the fish.

When placing the order, I'd ordered an a la carte plate of fried squids because I thought the portion of the food from the set will be small.
Fried Squid (RM 15)
Well fried and it offered some mild crisp on the outisde. However, it was let down by the taste and flavour of it.

When you have finished your dinner, they will compliment you with a platter of mixed fruits. At that point of time, I think that the meal is even more value to money!
Mixed fruits

I was persuaded by their manager Mr. Alex to try out their herbal jelly dessert.
Herbal Jelly dessert a.k.a Guillingao (RM 3.80)
Great stuff! The jelly were smooth and silky too! I like the sweetness accompanied with the bitterness that sets to linger in your mouth.

The stall do offer fried noodles and other seafood dishes as well. The promotion set meals is still running and it is still unknown on when it will end. So hurry up to this stall to try out their dish before the promotion ends! Seriously, you cannot get cheaper set meals of this kind at any other place.

Atmosphere: 5.5/10
Food: 6/10 (non-halal)
Price: 10/10
Verdict: The promotion set meals are just too value to the money!

Hok Seng Steamboat Buffet @ Sunway Mentari Business Park, PJ

If one mentioned about Sunway Mentari, there is no doubt that it will trigger someone to think of steamboat buffet. Steamboat buffet around Sunway Mentari has been mushrooming for the past few years. With more than 10 choices around, every stall operator need to come out with fresh ideas to lure the customers.

One of the latest addition to the Sunway Mentari steamboat stall is the Hok Seng Steamboat. Located at the new Sunway Mentari Business Park Phase 2, this stall allowed you to have a steamboat buffet at the price of RM 23.80 per pax.
Restoran Hok Seng Steamboat

The stall is nicely renovated with great setup and lighting. A very welcoming ambiance indeed for you to enjoy the steamboat.
Welcoming ambiance

Upon seated, you will be served with a bowl of chicken soup as an appetizer.
Chicken soup
The soup is quite similar to the shark fin soup. Starchy, but this one consisted of a lot of chicken meat instead of shark fin and crab meat. No complain on the taste though.

Marmite Chicken Wing
One of their specialty dish. Wings were deep fried before being drizzled with seasoned marmite gravy. Not entirely like marmite as the taste were more on the sweet side. Pretty addictive though.

Fried Wan Tan and Sui Kow
This is the fried stuff where I enjoyed eating the most. The wan tan and sui kow were freshly fried resulted to a mild crisp on the outside that went well with the decent paste within. One helping is never enough. Best to dip with some mayonnaise.

Oil Fritters Stuffed with Fish Paste
Decent and nothing really "wow" in particular.

Fried Chicken Boxing
Well fried, well breaded and well seasoned. Another favourite dish of mine.

Kam Heong Crab
Lived up to the name of it. Adequate usage of dried shrimps to bring out the best of kam heong. Crabs were alright but were on the smaller size.

Those above mentioned dishes were actually the ready food. Good to serve your hungry stomach while waiting for your pot of steamboat to boil. As for the soup base, they were chicken, tom yam, herbal and soya to choose from.
Chicken and Tom Yam Flavour
The chicken soup base is pretty decent. However, the tom yam soup base is rather a let down as it was flavoured way too tangy.

Time to move to the open fridge to pick the choice of your fish balls and many other ingredients offered by the stall.
Pick your choice of the many fish balls

Just one each could make up a full plate

Sliced meat, fish and other seafood were catered as well

They are very generous with the ingredients

Different plate with different ingredients
Amongst my favourite was the Hokchiew fishball where it was stuffed with some pork meat within. Pork ball, sotong ball and vegetable ball made up the list of my favourites.

It is ready when the soup is boiling

Choices of sauce
I'm a bit disappointed with their sauces though. None of them appealed to my taste, not even the basic chili sauce.

A seafood lover you are? Don't worry because they have many type of seafood to compliment your steamboat.
Some of the clams and shell seafood

Fresh Meat Crab
Grab your piece before they are gone. Hot stuff! Please be gentle though and think of the rest.

Fresh water Prawn
The size are rather big and the meat is succulent. I like the part where they keep refilling them whenever it is emptied.

Steamboat should taste better if it is accompanied with some vegetables. And for this, the stall have at least 9 choices of vegetables for you to choose from.
Variety of vegetables

Just in case you want some noodles, they do prepared them for you as well. They even have the Udon noodles.
Assorted noodles

Being a person with sweet tooth, I'm rather particular with their offering on desserts. I must admit that I do enjoyed having their desserts a lot.
Tau Foo Fa Jelly
Tasted a bit flat though but did enough to persuade me for a few helpings.

King's Ice Cream
My personal favourite would be the Chocolate and Chocolate Mint Flavour.

You can take as many food as you want. But do remember that, always take within your consumption limit. It's always good to be prudent. Buffet are meant to be enjoyed.
Please avoid wastage

The ready food were all good and some of them were awesome. There were wide variety of steamboat ingredients and seafood to choose from as well. Coupled with a wide array of vegetables and noodles, it really spoil you for choices. Most important, they were all fresh.

The drawback would be the need to order the drinks on an extra surcharge. Apart from that, I must say that I really had a great time enjoying my buffet steamboat here.

Atmosphere: 5.5/10

Petrosains, The Discovery Centre @ Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur [8th April 2010]

Back during the April, my little cousin was back for a short visit. Supposedly wanted to bring him for a little more adventurous activity like trekking for waterfall, but unfortunately, he had to stay away from water related activities this year due to his Chinese horoscope.

That left us not much choice. To bring him to a museum or a science. Well, at least he will get to know more about Malaysia. I suggested Petrosains Discovery Centre to him and he agreed to it without any hesitation. This will be his very first time exploring this science gallery which is located in KLCC, Kuala Lumpur.
Petrosains Discovery Centre

The entrance fee to the gallery is priced at RM 12 for adult(18 years and above) and RM 4 for children (5-12 years old). The journey of the gallery begins with Dark Ride, where you are seated on the slow moving coaster equipped with sound and clips of introduction to the transformation of Malaysia throughout the years. Then approximately 15 minutes later, you will reached another part of the gallery where you descend from the coaster and continue the journey by walking.
This is where it begins

Shape your pipes to get the quickest time for the ball to drop

Optic illusion of 3d wand

How does it feel to ride a bulldozer?

Man with the mirror

There were many little kiosks demonstrating the law of science, offering some games in between. We spent nearly half an hour in the first section before reaching Geotime Diorama.
Geotime Diorama

This is the section where it will take you back to more than 200 millions years ago, exploring the vast ancient environment. Not only that, there were lots of kiosks showcasing about the many types of fossils, rocks and petroleum.
200 million years ago look alike?
And, the cute part about this section was that the T-Rex can actually sing in Bahasa Malaysia!

Variety of rocks formation

Looked like honey, but it is Petroleum

Shortly, we reached a section where there were a staff performing some science tricks. I must admit that my science knowledge had been returned to the school.
Worker performing some science trick
There were more kiosks at the section, showcasing more law and theories of science. Best of all, there are certain kiosks that allowed you to experiment them yourself. My pick would be experiencing the strong Earthquake. Ok, Earthquake is really scary.

Science can be beautiful

Next we moved on the Outer Space Section, where you will get to enhance your knowledge on the solar system and as well as experiencing the life of an astronaut.

There was this section that you will need to pass through before moving the next Exploration section. Named as the Sparkz, this section is like a playground for children, only that those facilities here are rather techy.
Interactive Art
Kids get early exposure to iMac. Ok, that's the world we are living now..

This is the part where I joined my little cousin to be a little kiddo for a while.
Grain Pit

Splashing, pulling and pouring were among the actions that I performed. Feels like working in a factory for a day.
Step 1, 2, 3

So called "Grain"

Hope you enjoyed your time here, lil cousin!=)

There were more to explore but unfortunately my camera ran out of battery. We spent near to 4 hours in the gallery before exiting via the Dark Ride again. And just before we leave the gallery, we were allowed to print a post card of remembrance.
OMG! T-Rex ya?

I had a great time with my little cousin. Never thought science could be as fun, or maybe I'm still a kid? Lols!
