12 Inch Oil Fritters, Te Chang You Tiao Wang Enterprise @ Paya Terubong, Penang

Oil fritters or more commonly known as Yau Chau Kueh, is another pastry enjoyed mostly by the Malaysians especially the Chinese community. Prepared by deep frying the fritters from protein flour dough, it is best enjoyed with a cup of black coffee, a bowl of congeee or even with your favourite bowl of dessert.

I was no exception, indeed I'd always love to have Yau Chau Kueh with a cup of black coffee. While on the way to Balik Pulau during my previous trip to Penang with my family, we stopped by a roadside stall selling oil fritters. Located along Jalan Paya Terubong, Te Chang You Tiao Wang Enterprise offers their signature food of 12 inch long stuffed oil fritters.

Whilst most of the oil fritters are being sold in their original taste, they offers a variety of stuffing flavours for your oil fritters. Just pick your flavour from Sausage + Mayonaise to Black and White Sesame Twins.

While waiting for the oil fritters, I'd manage to have a slight observation on how the oil fritters are being prepared. Firstly, the oil fritters dough is hand-tossed on a wide stainless steel platform.

Then the dough is being laid on the platform before the cutting process to form it into a fritter shape.
Each fritters is being hand cutted

Just like machine, each of the fritters looked very equal and similar in the size.

Time to Yau Chau them which literally means deep frying the fritters. It is being done in a clean looking stainless pool of hot oil.
Frying them!

As you can see, it is a very neat process as those oil fritters are being cooled down before selling them to the public.

And the flavours that we ordered were Floss + Mayonnaise and Kaya + Butter. We could already smell the fragrant from the oil fritters even before tasting them.
Floss + Mayonnaise (RM 2.50 for each long fritter)
It never disappoints. Indeed, it tasted better than the the smell and look suggested. The fritters were so fragrant that you could hardly stop munching them. Not only that, it offers a pleasant mild crisp on the outside while being fluffy in the inside. However, I find the stuffing of Floss + Mayonnaise a little weird to go with the fritters.

Kaya + Butter (RM 2 for each long fritter)
This was the bomb! I finished them all almost by myself. The goodies oil fritters blended so well with the aromatic kaya + butter. In fact, it increases the overall fragrance of the oil fritters with extra sweetness kicking in.

No worries if you are not a fan of stuffed oil fritters because they do sell the conventional plain oil fritters as well.
Plain oil fritters (RM 1 each)
This is where you get to taste the originality of the aromatic oil fritters. Awesome!

Oil Fritters: 9/10

Price: 7.5/10

Verdict: Mouth-watering oil fritters that will keep you out of words!
