Grilled Chicken Wing and Pork Satay, New Lane Hawker Centre @ Lorong Baru, Penang

If you fancies grilled food and happened to be having your meal in New Lane Hawker Centre, remember not to miss out the grilled chicken wing and satay stall. Since they are a few stall selling the same food, I took some picture of the stall to avoid confusion on which stall to order from.

On my previous visit, I ordered the grilled chicken wing from the stall which is located on the same row with Penang Sunway Hotel.

New Lane Grilled Chicken Wing (RM 2 each)
The chicken wing was grilled perfectly without any over grilled spotted. First bite, unfolded the sweetness of the honey coating that followed swiftly by the juiciness of the well marinated chicken wing. This is where one is never enough.

Next, I'd ordered some Batu Maung satay as well from the stall located opposite the row of Penang Sunway Hotel.

Fanning for fire

Batu Maung satay is the type of satay that is eaten on it's own without any peanut gravy.
Batu Maung Pork Satay (RM 0.80 each)
The meat were all well marinated with the special seasoning, reflecting the true Batu Maung taste without the strong hint of kunyit. Not only that, the meat were lean, tender and juicy as a result of perfect grilling. Another two thumbs up delicacy that was bursting with flavour!

If you ask me on which both of the grilled food that I preferred, I will tell you that I cannot choose because both were equally lip smacking good! Don't miss it and you will agree with me once you've tried them.

Hainanese Chicken Rice & Lobak, Kafe Kheng Pin @ Penang Road

Kafe Kheng Pin is not a strange name amongst those food lovers. In fact, it has been around for some times and being so, it definitely must have something that preserved it's existence.

Located at the corner of Penang Road, Kafe Kheng Pin offers something unusual that you will crave for in Penang. You may be thinking that it might be fried koay teow or even asam laksa but it is not these food that pull the crowds.
Kafe Kheng Pin, off Jalan Sri Bahari

The coffee shop can get really crowded and if you visit them during the peak hours especially during the weekends, so be prepared to wait for your seat.
Crowded especially during the peak hours

The something unusual I was referring to was Hainanese Chicken Rice! Most of the local folks and tourist visited Kafe Kheng Pin to have a share of this famous Hainanese Chicken Rice.
Kheng Pin Hainanese Chicken Rice

You got to be there early to avoid disappointment. The chicken were so popular that it could be sold out by 2pm.
Lady boss always busy with chopping works

Hainanese Chicken
The chicken meat were so tender and unbelievably smooth. Not only that, the meat were equally juicy and applied to the breast part as well. Too bad I'm not a fan of chicken skin else you will enjoyed more by having the smooth skin together. Drizzled with the lightly seasoned gravy, it bring out the best of a soaked chicken in a true Hainanese way.

I'd always like to dip the chicken meat into some chili sauce.
Chili sauce
Too bad that the chili sauce was a let down for being too sour. Could have been better with an increased sweetness in the taste.

A Hainanese chicken meal is incomplete without the accompaniment of a plate of Hainanese chicken rice. Hainanese chicken rice is basically prepared by cooking the rice with minced onions, some garlics and gingers.
Hainanese Chicken Rice
A good point to note that the rice was not oily unlike the typical butter rice from most of the chicken rice stall. It tasted decent but not something to really shout about. I would say it is better than most of the Hainanese rice stall but still can't beat my all time favourite Mum's Hainanese Chicken Rice.

The total bill for the Hainanese Chicken Rice came to RM 17.40 for a pax of 3 which includes 2 plate of rice and some soup. Pretty reasonable pricing for the smooth chicken meat that we had.

Another crowd puller food to Kheng Pin coffee shop is the lobak stall. Operated by an uncle and a lady which I believed it is her wife, you will noticed that the orders were non stop coming in. Well, just placed your order to him and he will tell you politely that you need to wait a while.
Kheng Pin Lobak Stall

You can never see the uncle stop frying those fritters while taking some orders from time to time. Not easy money really, especially during the hot and humid weather in the afternoon.
Freshly fried from the wok

After almost half an hour of wait, my Lobak is finally served to the table. For those who find Lobak new to you, it is actually a Penang delicacy that consisted of assorted deep fried stuff namely fried bean curd, fried squids, prawn and fish fritters.
Assorted Lobak (RM 9 per plate)
You can actually pick your own assortment. However, to make things easier to the uncle, I ordered the assorted platter of lobak. It was fresh from the wok but was not too hot for the mouth to handle. My first bite resulted to an amazement of the crispiness offered by those fritters. It made me stood a while, wondering why those Lobak in Kl does not taste half like this?

The Lobak is already good on it's own. However, should you want some dip for your lobak, there are two prepared dip sauces for you.
Accompaniment Sauce
Just pick your flavour. The oozy black sauce that consisted some white egg or the spicy chili sauce.

Even though I'm not really a big fan of those above mentioned food, I must really say that they are really good and worth my money spending them. The only problem that it required you to patiently for your food especially the Lobak. Oh well, I supposed it is worthwhile for as long as you get some great food, obviously if you are a food lover!

Hainanese Chicken Rice: 7.5/10
Assorted Lobak: 8/10

Atmosphere: 4/10

Price: 6.5/10
Verdict: Memorable smooth chicken meat and crispy lobak. Avoid visiting during peak hours to reduce your waiting time.

Restoran Kar Cheong Chicken Rice @ SS 14, Subang Jaya

When one mentioned about bean sprout chicken rice, one will automatically think of Ipoh. Honestly, I think that Ipoh bean sprout chicken rice is over rated and one need not to travel all the way to Ipoh just for bean sprout chicken rice.

There is this stall that serves very good bean sprout chicken rice, if not better than those of at Ipoh. Named as Restoran Kar Heong, it is situated at Section 14 of Subang Jaya and this is where I satisfied my craving for bean sprout chicken rice ever since I knew their existence.
Restoran Kar Heong Chicken Rice

One thing I like about here is that you can actually choose your type chicken, the commercialized chicken or kampung chicken. Kampung chicken meat is more tender and cost slightly more expensive.
Steamed Chicken (RM 5 per plate)
Smooth, tender and juicy chicken meat drizzled with the perfectly flavoured soya sauce. Pure bliss and it went so well with their chicken rice.

Bean Sprout (RM 2)
Thick, fat and short are the attributes of Ipoh bean sprout. Not only that they uses genuine Ipoh bean sprout, it was very fresh as well, making it my must-order dish whenever I visited this place.

Pork Ball and Prawn Wan Tan (RM 3.50 per bowl of 5)
Another signature dish that should not be missed. The pork ball were very meaty and full with porky aroma while the prawn wan tan were just simply succulent and sweet.

Ipoh Hor Fun with Prawn Wan Tan (RM 5)
I'm not really a fan of Hor Fun soup, but I must admit that the Ipoh Hor Fun here really caught my attention. The soup was very flavourful and comes together with the smooth Hor Fun. Together with the generous serving of vegetables, it has what it take to be my favourite Ipoh Hor Fun.

The next time you heard people telling you how good the Ipoh bean sprout chicken rice was, do share with them about this stall. Perhaps they will have second thought after trying the food here.

Atmosphere: 5/10
Food: 7.5/10 (non-halal)
Price: 6/10
Verdict: Steamed chicken is simply awesome! Do not missed out the prawn Wan Tan as well.

Restoran First Famous Federal, Char Siew @ Lorong Susu, Penang

While undoubtedly Penang are famous for it's hawker food, many would not know that there were a few places that are famous for their roasted meat rice. One of the stall that is famous for this is located at the alley of Lorong Susu, off Mcallister Road.

After the hiking day out, Phooi Khuan and I was so hungry that we decided to pamper ourselves with a heavy lunch For this reason, it is time for my revisit to this stall that is famous for it's roasted pork, Char Siew.

This would be my second time visiting this stall. My first time dated back in last year December when my parents did heard about this stall from my uncle. I supposed most of the Penangites should know the existence of this stall. Most of my Penang friends were aware of this stall as well. Phooi Khuan did told me that this stall has existed for decades and the current operator was actually the son of the previous owner.

There were roasted duck, roasted chicken, Siew Yuk, Char Siew and even steamed chicken to choose from. Since there were only two of us, we chose the famous Char Siew and the roasted chicken.
Roasted Chicken and Char Siew
The Char Siew werestill as good as my first visit even though it was a little bit burned out. The Char Siew was full with flavour thanks to the well marination. The meat were juicy and lean , exactly the way a good Char Siew should be. Meanwhile, the roasted chicken was rather very average.

Sauces for extra dip
They have a few sauces namely the sauce for the Char Siew and roasted chicken respective. The sauces were of nothing brilliant and I suppose it lacks a little flavour. Sames goes for the chili sauce.

Specialty Chicken Rice
This is not a plate or ordinary rice. The rice was flavoured resembling the taste of a Hainanese chicken rice. It was aromatic and not oily as opposed to those typical margarine chicken rice in Kuala Lumpur. It went so well with the roasted meat.

Preserved Vegetable Soup
This is a bomb! The soup comes as a complimentary. Sour and spicy were the main flavour of the soup. It was so addictive that I could not resist myself but finishing up a noodle bowl of it. Fancy sour stuff, or need something to open your appetite? This will be your answer.

I did commented to the lady boss that our plate of Char Siew was a little burned out on that day. Instead of getting a typical explanation from other stall operators, she just walked away and came back with a new plate of Char Siew. I liked! This is the way a person should conduct a business.
New plate of Char Siew

The total bill came to RM 15 which included two plate of rice. I reckon the price was very reasonable taking into the fact that the portion of the servings were huge. Adding on, the complimentary soup is refillable at no extra charges.

Atmosphere: 5/10
Food: 7/10 (non-halal)
Price: 6.5/10
Verdict: The Char Siew and the soup were the bomb!

Roast Duck Loong Foong @ Taman Paramount

When we mention about Taman Paramount, maybe many people would thought of the LRT Station that located there. But for those food lovers, I'm pretty sure that they knew that Taman Paramount is indeed one of a place that offers better food in the Petaling Jaya area.

After the relaxing trip to Ulu Yam, we were back to Petaling Jaya area near to 7pm. Hock Beng suggested to have roasted duck as dinner at Taman Paramount. I agreed without thinking any further since I fancies roasted duck and my stomach was kinda hungry already.

I had been hearing a lot about this roasted duck stall since years ago. But for some reason, I have yet to taste them, not until that day. It operates on a stall basis being stationed at this corner lot restaurant called Loong Foong Seafood Restaurant.

Barely before 7pm, you can see the whole restaurant almost full house with nearly all the table will at least have a plate of roasted duck on it.
Popular with the crowds

Ambra Juice

Since they were only two of us, we ordered half a bird which costed us RM 23. A whole bird of roasted duck were slightly cheaper, being priced at RM 45. After almost half an hour of wait, our roasted duck finally came to the table. The wait was presumably long because our dinner fell under the peak hour of dinner time.
Chili and the Duck Sauce
The chili sauce was alright but the duck sauce was lacking a little scent of herbs.

Roasted Duck
The duck was roasted perfectly resulting to a tender and juicy meat. The sweetness juice of duck were bursting out upon each bite on the meat. However, the skin were not as crispy as the one being prepared by their closest competitor, Sunrise. The scent of the herb can be tasted but not as strong as the one offered by the Hoppy Restaurant franchise and it does good for those who dislikes the strong hint of herbs.

Atmosphere: 5/10
Food: 7.5/10
Price: 6/10
Verdict: It definitely lives up to it's billing as one of the top roast duck in the town!
