Fruity Shaved Ice KTZ Food Dessert @ Kepong Baru, Kepong

Right after the pipping hot experience of Ka Ka Bak Kut Teh, we decided to grab something cool to chill our body. Nothing is more suitable than KTZ Food Dessert which is located at the stretch of food stalls along the Jalan 7 of Kepong Baru.

This KTZ Food Dessert in Kepong is actually the main/first of the many branches of it's chain in Klang Valley. KTZ Food Dessert Kepong are well known for it's dessert, particularly the fruity shaved ice sago dessert , similar to the one located in SS 2-Petaling Jaya.
KTZ Food Dessert Kepong

I find the crowd here is of lesser than the one in the SS 2 branch which is a good thing considering we do not need to wait for a table.
Still crowded, but lesser as compared to the SS 2 branch

There are a variety of hot and cold desserts to choose from. However, if you are first timer to KTZ Food Dessert, you definitely must try out their best seller desserts - Fruit Loh, which are the fruit shaved ice sago dessert.
Honey Dew Loh (RM 4.50 per bowl)
Offers a refreshing experience of honey dew flavour that is not too heavily syruped yet taste great.

The texture of their shaved ice are pretty fine and smooth although it can't beat the one in Snowflake Taiwanese Dessert. However, it is no non-sense when it comes to the taste. There is no room to experience any tasteless shaved ice as they are so well infused with the flavour as per your order.

Not only that, KTZ Food Dessert fruity shaved ice came with some chunks of fruit too, offering some extra bites.
Mango Loh (RM 5.50 per bowl)
Mango lovers will definitely love this. The mango puree is thick and is bursting with original mango flavour. Each scoop is just so mango-ish.

I spotted some other table enjoying some finger food which reminds me so much of the past. Obviously I did order a plate of it for myself.
Fried Siew Kow (RM 4.50 per pax)
Think of a pork meat and salted egg yolk being wrapped in a thin wantan skin before being shaped into a ball and deep fried. The fried siew kow will then be cut into pieces just like above(the pic). Not many place serve this dish, in fact this is my very first time eating it many years after my mum retires from cooking it. Reminiscence of the past, so delectable.

Not only they have a wide variety of desserts to choose from, they do offer an wide array of selected finger food, noodles and snacks. Don't worry about being adventurous because you will most likely will not be disappointed with their selection. After all, this stall Chinese name is known as Kei Tak Sek-which literally means "Remember to Eat". So if you happen to be here, start ordering and don't forget to eat!

Honey Dew Loh: 6.5/10
Mango Loh: 7.5/10
Fried Siew Kow: 8/10 (non-halal)

Atmosphere: 4.5/10
Price: 6/10
Verdict: One of my favourite stall to satisfy my craving for dessert!

Penang Break Away @ Gurney Drive & Burma Road [6th Mar 2010]

This trip was on an ad-hoc basis, with no proper planning. It all started with a chat with Phooi Khuan over the messenger and we realized that it has been quite a while since we last catch up. Taking into account of my never seems to end misfortune events over the past few weeks, I thought it will be good for a short break away in Penang with my lovely friends over there.

Initially, I thought of traveling north to Penang on Friday but was postponed to the next day due to the unavailability of tickets. I traveled on Aeroline bus departing from Sunway at 6pm, and it took about 4 hours before reaching Queensbay Mall where Pei Yee picked me up and we headed off to Gurney Drive, in which she has a problem with the direction. Sweat.
Gurney Drive at night

I'd always reached Penang either during the morning or afternoon. This was unusual and it left me not much choices for food to cure my hungry stomach. The only place I can think of was Gurney Drive.

I had decided to start my supper session with Asam Laksa since I can hardly find a decent one in Kuala Lumpur. There were a lot of Asam Laksa stall to choose from at Gurney Drive, and you gotta choose the right one that suited your taste bud.
Pei Yee recommendation

Pei Yee told me that this was her mum's favourite Asam Laksa stall whenever they patronize Gurney Drive. Time for a first try.
No. 11 Stall Asam Laksa (RM 3)
Decent, but I still prefer the Sunrise stall at the right end where I'd always ordered from. No doubt, it was still better than a lot of Asam Laksa in Kuala Lumpur though.

Feeling hungry still as I did not had a proper dinner, I opted for the second meal. I chose Sui Kow since I had always wondered how the Penang version taste a like.
Upon ordering, I was being told that the Sui Kow came in 10 pieces. I told them that I can't afford to finish them all and insisted on a reduced amount. Then they told me that, RM 8 for 8 pieces, and I rejected it for a second time because it was pricey! I finally gave in until they agreed selling me 5 pieces of Sui Kow at RM 4. Man, some of the Gurney drive hawkers are hard to deal with.

Sui Kow in Soup (RM 4 for 5 pieces)
The Sui Kow was below average. The essential ingredients of prawn, pork and chestnut were missing and consisted only fish paste. The soup meanwhile was a little too pepperish.

Ever wondered what do you get when you merged Mcdonald with Kentucky?
You got a McTucky Stall

This stall specialized on fried stuff such as fried fishballs, nuggets, sausages and many more.
Selling fast

But their specialty is the crispy chicken skin. You could see orders upon orders coming from the people and a wait of 10 minutes is normal.
Crispy chicken skin

We waited for nearly 15 minutes before our fresh crispy chicken skin was ready, fresh from the frying wok!
Crispy chicken skin (RM 3)
The chicken skin were so fluffy and crispy and adding on with the taste, it was so addictive. Good food is bad, seriously.

Pei Yee needed to be home early and could not join for the second round. Next, I was with Phooi Khuan sipping on some drinks at this place located along the famous road of Gurney Drive.

We had our chit-chat session here and the ambiance were just as right. Friends, love, families and memories were among the topic we touched on. From the way she told me things, I can see that Phooi Khuan had indeed matured a lot throughout the years.

Watermelon Juice

Jasmine Tea

We lingered on until near to 4am before we headed for a very early breakfast at the Green House Prawn Mee located along Jalan Burma. Their business hour starts at 8pm and continue through the wee hours. At my time of visit, I could see many clubbers with their fancy clothing here having their early breakfast.
The famous Burma Road Prawn Mee

Green House Prawn Mee (RM 3.50)
I like the roasted pork serving where it add extra flavour to the already flavourful soup. I would definitely rate this as one of the best hokkien mee in Penang.

I bumped in to Phooi Khuan place throughout this entire Penang break away. By the time I reached her place, it was already almost 5am. Time for a sleep before the next day kicks in.

Lunch @ Taman Bunga Raya, Setapak [28th Jan 2010]

When talk about Setapak, it reminds me so much. I spent 4 years being there during my college life. Back in January, I was at Setapak area to buy a number plate for my new car at the JPJ headquarter.

When I reached JPJ headquarter, it was near to 1pm. I was told that they were closed for lunch break and the services only resumed at 2pm. I supposed it was a good time for me to visit Taman Bunga Raya for my lunch rather than just waiting.
Taman Bunga Raya

The street on that day were rather quiet, because most of the TARC students were having their semester break. Otherwise, it will be a very busy street. Back then during my college life, I do not owned a car, and I did ate out a lot in this area.
The street that usually full with TARCians

There was this particular roadside stall that was famous for their economy fried Bee Hoon. The Bee Hoon costed you only RM 1 and comes with sambal. Obviously, you can add on some side dishes if you fancy some extra bites.
Plenty to choose from

Tom Yam Bee Hoon with Fish Stick (RM 2)
The Bee Hoon was decently flavoured with Tom Yum. I'd still prefer the original Bee Hoon though. I chose this as the original one were sold out. And the sambal still tasted as good that goes well with the Bee Hoon. Man, brought back lots of my memories during my college time!

There were tables and chairs being setup by the roadside for those that chose to have it there. Back then, I always sit there with my bunch of friends for our lunch. I was told by the Auntie that the Bee Hoon stall boss took over the corner coffee shop right opposite this stall, and you could actually have your bee hoon there. This time round, I opted to sit in the coffee shop because it was so hot outside.
Watermelon Juice (RM 1.80)
Obviously, the price has increased but it was still below the RM 2 mark. Still tasted very decent, and at it's price, you really could not complain any further.

I walked up the alley until I reached another corner end of the shop lot. My stomach was still hungry and I chose mixed rice as my second meal because the mixed rice at Taman Bunga Raya used to be good, cheap and delicious during my college time. However, I stoned a while when the lady passed me the white rice and ask me to scoop my preferred dishes. Back then, it was them that scooped your preferred dishes.
Mixed Rice with 3 dishes (RM 3.50)
I took some pickled vegetables, fried pork meat and a slice of luncheon meat. Taste wise, the vegetables was bland while the fried pork meat was full with fats! It costs me RM 3.50 for this plate. I find it slightly pricey though. Perhaps, I was accustomed to the old price of RM 2.80 that comes with 4 dishes of your choice and a plain rice.

The place still looked pretty much the same minus the part where the TAR college kids are getting richer as told by some of the old folks of the stall. Oh, how fast things have changed! Anything it is, Taman Bunga Raya will always have a place in my memory lane.
